The Ghaznavids (975 - 1187 A.D.) were Turkish slave soldiers under the the Samanids who took over and then ruled in Persia, Transoxania, and northern parts of the Indian subcontinent, with their capital in Ghazni, Afghanistan. Mas'ud I lost the western territories to the Seljuqs in the Battle of Dandanaqan reducing the Ghaznavid state to what is now Afghanistan, Balochistan and the Punjab.
